Institute for Urban Planning and Smart City

About the Institute for Urban Planning and Smart City

The Institute of Urban Planning and Smart Cities (IUPSC) was established as a research hub focusing on the recurring issues related to urban areas. Our team comprises researchers from various research centres such as the Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development (CSID), Research Center for Advanced Vehicle (RCAVe), and Smart City. We offer assistance to stakeholders with an interdisciplinary approach, cross- scale collaboration and scientific innovation by optimising the utilization of digital technology.

With the hope of creating inclusive cities that can improve the welfare of its people in a sustainable and integrated manner, we provide services such as certified-non-degree programs and consultancy.

Advanced Lab

Interactive Media Sublab

The inclusion of a Media Sublab as a supporting sub-lab in urban planning education is crucial for enhancing physical visualization and understanding of complex data, improving design and planning skills, and integrating technology into the planning process. Through interactive miniature models, students can engage in hands-on learning, simulate real-world scenarios, and explore innovative urban design and planning solutions. The lab also fosters collaboration among students from various disciplines, facilitates community engagement, and ensures graduates are well-prepared for real-world challenges by providing practical experience with contemporary tools and techniques for simulating interventions in urban areas. Overall, the Media Sublab bridges the gap between traditional practices and modern technological advancements, making it an essential component for effective urban planning education.

Advanced Lab

Virtual Reality Sublab

The Virtual Reality (VR) Sublab in urban and regional design education provides researchers and students with immersive and interactive tools for exploring complex urban systems and designs. By utilizing VR environments, users can better visualize, model, experience, and understand transport planning, infrastructure, regional development, and transport systems in a realistic and engaging manner. The VR Sublab enhances the quality of education by offering hands-on experiences with advanced technology, fostering a deeper comprehension of urban engineering and smart cities. Additionally, it promotes innovative problem-solving and design solutions that can positively impact society and the environment, ensuring that future urban planners are wellequipped to address contemporary challenges in urban and regional development.

Advanced Lab

Integrated Studio

The Integrated Studio Lab is a virtual space designed to support collaborative teaching and learning activities of the Studio course in the Master of Urban and Regional Planning study program to enhance the educational experience by providing a comprehensive and interactive learning environment. The studio supports the practical application of the crucial theoretical knowledge for developing the skills needed in urban and regional planning by involving the application and practice of various theories, organized into several groups. The Integrated Studio Lab provides essential facilities for discussions, presentations, on-site manual drawing, and data archiving with computers. Available resources include Hi-target GPS RTK systems for precise measurement and mapping of spatial data in the designed city area, a 360° Conferencing Camera for seamless communication and discussion with resource persons from different locations, and an Interactive Smart Board for conveniently and interactively displaying and editing survey results, analyses, and urban designs. Overall, the Integrated Studio Lab promotes a hands-on, collaborative, and technologically advanced approach to urban planning education, ensuring that students are well-prepared to tackle real-world challenges in their professional careers

Advanced Lab

Urban Analytic Sublab

The Urban and Regional Sublab is designed to facilitate the understanding of real-life urban situations through research and education initiatives that emphasize collaborative approaches. It enhances the ability of researchers and students to collect, analyze, and interpret complex data, leading to more informed and effective urban and regional planning decisions. By providing real-time urban cases with digital and analog data from various sources and equipping users with a detailed physical model of a city, the sublab fosters researchers’ and students’ ability to implement their plans and designs directly onto 3D city models. By offering cutting-edge tools and fostering collaboration, the sublab promotes interdisciplinary learning and innovation, ensuring that urban planners are well-prepared to address contemporary challenges.
